CANVAS webinar on April 2, 2020.
In a prolonged moment of social distancing and sheltering in place, we find ourselves turning to artists for help. Artists and creatives are actively providing entertainment and distraction when we are stranded in our homes. They are helping us empathize with those who are suffering, process our own feelings, and let us try to come to terms with our new reality, together. But artists are also among the first to suffer in this moment.
Working artists have seen their incomes evaporate. Performances, gallery openings, standing gigs, book releases, all have been cancelled or put on indefinite hold. This conversation, hosted by CANVAS — a new collaborative giving fund devoted to Jewish arts & culture and incubated at JFN — will give participants a firsthand account of how these issues are playing out in real-time, and how funders within the Jewish community and beyond are rising to the occasion.
Speakers: Lou Cove (Founder of CANVAS & Senior Advisor at the Harold Grinspoon Foundation); Tzivia Schwartz-Getzug (JFN West Coast Director & Senior Advisor at CANVAS); Ben Gundersheimer aka Mister G (Latin GRAMMY Winner and Penguin-RandomHouse/PJ Library Author); Naomi Firestone-Teeter (Executive Director, Jewish Book Council); Shayna Rose Triebwasser (Senior Philanthropic Advisor at the Righteous Persons Foundation and Malka Aliza Travaglini (Senior Program Officer at The Klarman Family Foundation).
